We hate waste. We love the planet.

We set out to create a house on our farm that would use as little energy and as few resources as possible, and with an off-grid power system that would power our household and farm needs, most of the time.

This is the EcoHouseOne. (So-called because someday we hope to build another one!)

We have tried to minimize resource use in the house’s design and construction, with the goal of it being a net-zero energy home. We also hope that it will be comfortable, functional and beautiful.

Maine is a great place for this project. Many folks nearby are handy, have built their own houses, and are generally open to seemingly nutty ideas. Learn more at the EcoHouseOne Blog and the EcoHouseOne Gallery.

<--- This is David McDaniel, designer, primary builder, and general contractor. Dave had no building or design experience prior to embarking on this adventure. But he does have a bloody-minded persistence that will not let him say “no”. After some building classes and engineering guidance from The Shelter Institute, he picked the brains of local builders and used Google as his building library to learn. And he had the good fortune to meet and hire Mark Llewellyn, a great carpenter and teacher.
